The Cure
Somebody said, “The cure for Domestic Violence is easy. Just don’t get in those types of relationships.”
But I say, it’s easier said than done. Look at it this way, most of America was in a Domestic Violence relationship with our then President Donald J. Trump. There were lies, broken promises, and all kinds of gaslighting. Guess what? That’s a domestic violence relationship.” Just leave!”
Some people who had the resources to leave, did. They went to Canada, Europe, Costa Rica. Some who have the resources for therapy, got that help. But for those of us that don’t have that kind of privilege to “just leave,” we stuck it out, hopeful that the next election would bring change. That was our exit plan.
Some of you will say, “But I didn’t vote for Trump, so I didn’t willingly get into that relationship.” I see your point. However, if you live in America, you are willingly participating in this democracy experiment understanding that even if you don’t vote for a particular candidate, they could be your president.
Children who are getting beat by their parents, can’t “just leave.”
Victims abused by their significant others who threaten to harm their loved ones if they leave, can’t “just leave.”
It’s a process. It’s a journey. And everyone’s journey is different. We owe it to them, to ourselves to not just look the other way. Help in the ways that you can. Be a better neighbor. Care about your neighbors. Actually, befriend them. Start small. Start with a simple smile. If that’s too much, a simple head nod to acknowledge their presence.
I am thankful to God for giving me another chance. I could’ve died when I was being choked.
For my birthday, I’m asking that you would give to my Justice? Or… Just Me? Project. Every donation is tax deductible. It’s to support the work I’m doing to bring awareness to domestic violence. Books, plays, short films, social media content, stand up, speaking, teaching.
